“You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”

“You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” – Harvey Dent (Two-Face) (The Dark Knight)

That’s a great quote from The Dark Knight movie.

Back when I was working in the corporate world, I saw a lot of “Yes” people.

People who knew what was happening in reality but knew the bosses didn’t want to hear it so they told the bosses what they wanted to hear.

I was not one of those.

I remember once our boss in London told us to run a certain mailing campaign test because it worked really well in the UK.

We knew from past experience this kind of campaign won’t work in Asia but we ran it anyways since we didn’t have a choice.

The results supported our original view (I won’t go into the details of the campaign here) because we knew our market best.

You would think the results would have been the end of this discussion but it wasn’t.

We were told to continue doing this and our results were possible due to something “we did wrong”.

Riiiiiiggghhhhhhhhtt.

The guys in our marketing department in the UK supported our results and views but they told the bosses what they wanted to hear (and threw us under the bus while they were at it).

This was one of those reasons I left the corporate world behind.

I am not a “Yes” person.

I will tell you what you need to hear no matter whether it ruffles your feathers or not.

So, as Harvey Dent put it, “You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”

So true Harvey, so true.
